You have seen Val d’Orcia’s vistas and villages in the movies, for they have appeared as both backdrop and character for many sumptuous films. The fields caressed by Russell Crowe in the Gladiator are just below the walls of Pienza; the palace where the Capulets lived in Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet is the Palazzo Piccolomini in the heart of Pienza; and the monastery where The English Patient was cared for by Juliette Binoche is set at Sant’Anna in Camprena, visible from Castelmuzio.

CULINARY DELIGHTS

The Val d’Orcia is home to the great red wines of Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Here you will taste the lush foods and fresh ingredients of the “cucina povera”, the traditional Tuscan peasant dishes that truly are the best “comfort foods” in the entire world, including: delectable Pecorino di Pienza, rare and precious white truffle, the finest extra virgin olive oil and highly perfumed saffron. CRETE SENESI

This area is yet another one of the most photographed in all of Italy, both for the uniqueness of the landscape and for the presence of historical and architectural buildings. The heart of Le Crete, a sandy, lunar landscape, has a magnetic fascination. The primary characteristic of this area is the earth’s grey color which features different shades and reflections according to the time of the day and the season. It is a vast area which features little vegetation and deeply eroded gullies, which looked carved by a cosmic sculptor.
